Missouri fire chief pleads guilty to asbestos violation

Joseph L. Washington was fired in early December from his position as Northeast Ambulance and Fire Protection District fire chief in St. Louis, Missouri. On December 14, Washington pleaded guilty in federal court to violating the federal Clean Air Act. While he served as president of the board for the district, he failed to notify federal regulators before having asbestos removed from the district’s offices. In return for his guilty plea, the U.S. Attorney’s office dropped six other felony counts against him.
