Asbestos workers back Minnesota gubernatorial candidate
Over 400 taconite workers from the United Steelworkers Local 6860 in Minnesota have endorsed candidate for governor Rep. Tom Rukavina. Rukavina has been a long-time supporter of organized labor—steelworkers in particular. The president of Local 6860 said that Rukavina cares about healthcare and workplace safety, and he has advocated for a thorough study of the high incidence of mesothelioma in Iron Range miners from northeastern Minnesota. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
Rukavina is a former miner and member of the United Steelworkers. His support from the local unions is bolstered by his promises to create more high-paying blue collar jobs in the state, to address the high cost of health care and to prioritize workplace safety.
