Community gathers to light up mesothelioma patient’s yard

Kenneth and Doris Hawkins of Purcell, Oklahoma have always drawn a crowd around their home during the holiday season. Kenneth would work year-round to create a Christmas Wonderland display of lights and decorations that delighted thousands of people each year.

This year, however, Kenneth was diagnosed with epithelioid malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Though he has responded well to his two rounds of chemotherapy, cancer treatment can take a lot out of a person. Members of the community decided to cheer Kenneth up by gathering in his yard on December 20 to leave fire-safe candles to light up the yard. Visitors could also drop off notes or cards in a box to let Kenneth know how much they appreciate all he has done.
