Posen Construction under investigation for using mesothelioma-causing asbestos in fill material

After Posen Construction was found to have included asbestos in the fill material used on the Summerlin overpass project in Florida, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) decided to investigate Posen’s other construction projects with possible asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a toxic mineral that is very dangerous when inhaled. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and other serious illnesses. If more than 260 linear feet of asbestos is discovered in the fill material at Summerlin Road, it will have to be removed. According to the DEP, there could be fines of up to $10,000 a day for the contamination. The Lee County Department of Transportation (DOT) holds Posen Construction accountable for the asbestos exposure, and the director said that the contractor will be responsible for the remediation costs. Posen had been chosen for the Summerlin job because their bid came in $13 million under budget, but the contractor will be getting no further work from the county.
