Firefighters practice in house donated for controlled blaze

Andy and Melissa Ziegler of Mille Lacs Country, Minnesota donated an old house for use by several local fire districts to conduct firefighting practice. They had initially purchased the building to help them expand their towing and auto repair business, but it turned out that the house was not salvageable. The couple paid to have asbestos flooring removed from the building, as the toxic substance can cause mesothelioma and other serious illnesses when its fibers are inhaled, before they donated it to the firefighters.

F.I.R.E. instructors were brought in to help firefighters from Milaca, Ogilvie, Foreston and Andover in a total of nine practice burns. Some of the firefighters entered the building up to four times. They conducted two evacuation practices before the house could no longer be entered safely and it was left to burn.
