General Industries factory cleanup almost finished

The former General Industries factory site in Elyria, Ohio is finally getting cleaned up after a July 2008 fire reduced it to rubble. The asbestos-contaminated debris remained untouched for over a year. Since the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took over the cleanup in October, over 2,555 tons of asbestos debris have been taken to a landfill and 1,014 tons of scrap steel have been removed and sold for $44,000.

The cleanup will continue until only the concrete slab remains, and it is estimated to cost between $600,000 and $800,000. The city has placed a $40,000 lien on the property, and the EPA will place a lien on the property to recoup its money in case property owner John Peshek ever sells it.
