Special vote held concerning town hall renovation costs

Sandy Creek, New York held a special vote on December 2 concerning amendments to a spending resolution for town hall renovations. The town board borrowed $1 million in 2007 to renovate the town hall building, but additional costs have sprung up to the tune of $300,000. One of these additional costs is for asbestos abatement.

The building was originally constructed as a recreation center for Blount Lumber employees in 1948. It contained a bowling alley, stage, pool hall, kitchen and apartment. The town bought the building and turned it into the town hall in 1975. It has no insulation, its electric circuitry is obsolete and it needs a lot of maintenance work. Current renovation work includes asbestos removal, HVAC replacement, electrical and plumbing upgrades and installation of a new roof, new shingles, new insulation, new windows, a new septic system, new interior walls and a new parking lot.
