Daytona Beach Pier in need of extensive repairs and renovations
The 84-year-old Daytona Beach Pier in Florida has seen better days. A report shows that three of its wooden pilings are 95% deteriorated, four pilings are 90% deteriorated and several more are at least 75% deteriorated. With loose parts, gaps, missing pilings, deteriorating hardware, exposed steel and coating failures, there is a lot of work to be done.
The president of Logan Diving & Salvage, the company that has performed about $1 million in repairs over the last few years, said that, despite all of these things, the pier is in good condition for its age. The Community Redevelopment Agency and City Commission met during the first week of December to discuss spending $500,000 for repairs to the pier’s substructure and $50,000 for architectural and engineering design work. The city took ownership of the pier for the first time six years ago when it was deeded to the city by its last owner.
Daytona Beach has budgeted $1.6 million for repairs, which would include renovations to the pier’s restaurant building. The restaurant requires asbestos abatement, rodent fumigation, repairs to door and window openings, and more. Repair work will be ongoing for several years, but the city hopes that the pier will be able to reopen in February.
