Asbestos removal could cost nearly $2 million as Ohio school district seeks bids
The school board in Youngstown, Ohio is seeking bids for asbestos removal in two of the 17 schools it is tearing down as part of its $190 million rebuilding program: Princeton School and Adams School. Engineering estimates place the asbestos removal for Princeton School at $1.25 million and for Adams School at $500,000. Asbestos was commonly used as insulation and fireproofing material in older schools and other public buildings. After the asbestos is removed, the school board will then seek bids for the demolition of both buildings.
The Ohio School Facilities Commission is picking up 80% of the costs of the school rebuilding project. Only four vacant school buildings will remain when this project is complete. There is some concern that the district may not have enough money left in its demolition fund to tear down Princeton and Adams Schools, but the construction manager believes that bids will come in under the engineering estimates due to the slow economy and construction market.
