Florida looks for mesothelioma-causing asbestos at $25 million overpass site
The Summerlin overpass in South Florida cost $25 million to create – and it may be contaminated with the toxic mineral asbestos. The site has been roped off with yellow caution tape as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) workers investigate the area for evidence of the asbestos. Asbestos is a known carcinogen with fibers that can cause a range of serious illnesses when inhaled, including lung cancer and mesothelioma.
The contractor that worked on the flyover, Posen Construction, has gotten into trouble for asbestos contamination before; the company was forced to clean up chunks of asbestos at a nearby job site a few years ago. Once the lab test results come back from the flyover site, the FDEP will need to determine whether or not the level of asbestos exceeds the legally acceptable amount. Work on the overpass remains on hold pending the results.
