Asbestos removal must take place before new bus station can be built

Brownsville, Texas is getting a new bus station, but there has been a slight delay in its construction. Before the city can demolish the buildings that sit on the future bus station site, asbestos has to be removed from two of the buildings. Asbestos is a toxic mineral that was commonly used in construction materials. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), inhaling asbestos fibers can cause major health problems, including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that affects the lining of the chest and abdomen.

The planned Brownsville Multimodal Terminal is projected to cost $14.6 million to construct. The change order for the asbestos removal added $53,234 to the project’s price tag. The Texas Department of State Health Services requires that the asbestos is removed prior to demolition, and it will be done in compliance with EPA and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
