California railroad site gets asbestos remediation

Developer Thomas Enterprises is spending $5 million to clean up the abandoned Southern Pacific railroad shops in Sacramento, California. Allied Environmental was hired for the remediation project, which began over three months ago. Certified abatement professionals have been removing sheet rock, floor tiles, pipe insulation, roofing material and adhesive that contain the toxic substance asbestos. There are piles of wood, metal and contaminated debris everywhere. Workers are trying to set aside anything connected with the city’s railroad history so it can be recycled and used in the new mixed-use district that will be called the Railyards.

Once the site is cleaned up, the Railyards will include residential housing, retail and office space, and a regional transportation center. At the heart of it all will be an open air market with an adjacent plaza. Several big ticket items have also been proposed, including a half-billion dollar arena, a performing arts center and a half-billion dollar county courthouse.
