Continental Steel Superfund cleanup nearly finished

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management began making plans to clean up the 180-acre former Continental Steel site in Kokomo back in 1990. Since then, there has been remediation of asbestos, lead and PCBs. Buildings have been demolished. The nearby Wildkat Creek was dredged to remove contaminants. Funding for such an enormous project has always been an issue, as incremental funding makes everything take much longer to accomplish.

With a new $6 million in federal stimulus funding, the cleanup is finally nearing the end, as the rest of the work can be done fairly quickly. It will take at least another two years to complete the remediation of the Superfund site, but the land can be put into productive reuse as cleanup on the various parts of the property is completed. The area will serve as an urban green space when the work is finished.
