Contractors fined $60,000 for Aldrich Chemical asbestos violations

RMT Inc. and Homrich Inc. were contracted by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as part of a reconstruction project that involved the demolition of the old Aldrich Chemical building in downtown Milwaukee. RMT was contracted to inspect the building and to oversee its demolition; RMT then hired Homrich to complete the demolition. The two contractors came to a settlement with the state over violations of various asbestos remediation rules that had been discovered by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) inspectors during the project.

Between October 2005 and April 2006, inspectors found that some areas of the building had been approved for demolition without being cleared of asbestos first. Asbestos-containing material was also discovered mixed in with other construction debris. The two contractors settled the charges by agreeing to pay a combined fine of $60,000 in penalties, $30,000 from each company.

Premium Abatement Contracting LLC of Michigan was also charged with asbestos violations related to the demolition project, but the company has not yet resolved the charges with the state.
