Mesothelioma death of Civic Center employee prompts asbestos removal

The Potsdam Civic Center in New York has finally had a series of asbestos abatement projects completed in its basement, upstairs courtroom and one of the front offices. The asbestos removal cost approximately $50,000. During the remediation of the courtroom, village court sessions took place in the first floor boardroom.

Although these sections of the civic center have been abated, asbestos still lurks in several areas of the structure. Air quality tests, however, have shown that there are no asbestos fibers in the air.

The village made asbestos abatement a priority after concerns were raised when long-time civic center employee Sharon LaDuke died of mesothelioma earlier this year. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to the toxic substance asbestos. LaDuke’s family is suing the village of Potsdam for her wrongful death due to an unsafe work environment. Former senior court clerk Shelley Warner is also suing the village for wrongful termination after she raised concerns about asbestos and workplace safety following her colleague’s death.
