Demolition finally begins at Oak Knoll

It’s been a long time coming, but demolition is finally beginning at the former Oak Knoll Naval Base in California. Lehman Brothers has released $550,000 of the $3.7 million it will be spending to demolish more than 90 buildings at the planned residential development project site. The money they released will pay for security guards, fencing repairs, hiring goat herds to clear brush that has become a fire hazard, asbestos removal, and removal of trash and debris from the site’s home, barracks, garages and other structures.

Asbestos must also be removed from multiple floors of the hospital building. The spokesman for the Oak Knoll Neighborhood Association says he is cautiously optimistic about the cleanup, but that he awaits the removal of the last building and the last health and safety hazard from the site.
