Two years later, Iowa fire site may finally get cleaned up

Fire ravaged several businesses in Maquoketa, Iowa in January 2008. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has provided funding for the cleanup of the asbestos-contaminated rubble left behind by the fire, but the city has to meet some requirements first. There must be a period open for public comments as to whether or not the site should be cleaned up; the comment period will close on December 14. The State Office of Historic Preservation may also become involved in the decision.

The city manager hopes to be able to award a contract for the cleanup at the council meeting on December 21. Under federal regulations, asbestos debris must be cleaned up before other work is done by qualified asbestos contractors before other work is done to protect the health and safety of those living and working in the area. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to serious illnesses like lung cancer and mesothelioma.
