Asbestos may give Illinois village an out on farm deal

The village of Homer Glen, Illinois had been looking to buy the Dunn Farm property to become its first community park. But despite the letter of intent signed by trustees in October, environmental studies have uncovered some major problems with the land, and the purchase might not go forward. The studies discovered asbestos in the buildings on the property as well as issues with the wells and a barrier between the site’s wetlands.

Because of the new-found environmental issues, Homer Glen has the option to buy the property despite the issues, renegotiate the terms of their deal with the developer or decide not to buy the site. The trustees must make their decision by January.

Many village residents were already against the purchase of Dunn Farm because of the poor economy and uncertainty about sales tax revenue, so from their perspective the asbestos discovery is a welcome chance to walk away from the deal. The village, however, is still interested in exploring options for parkland.
