Asbestos removal at Indiana hospital could cost almost $1 million
The old hospital in Corydon, Indiana had an original estimate between $200,000 and $300,000 for asbestos removal. But once AsbesTECH Inc. went in to begin the remediation process, they found much more asbestos than had been planned for. The cost for the asbestos removal could now total somewhere between $800,000 and $900,000 – triple the amount of the original estimate. Asbestos is a hazardous substance that can cause a number of serious illnesses when its fibers are inhaled. Removal of asbestos must be done in a regulated manner to protect the health and safety of the workers.
Though the county hadn’t planned for this in the budget, there are some things that can be done to offset the cost. Bid specifications have been sent out for the asbestos removal and other portions of the $13 to $15 million county government complex project.
