Richmond Zombie Walk raises money in memory of mesothelioma victim

Anthony Menez and Josh Bishop have been the organizers of the annual Richmond Zombie Walk since 2006. Every year, hundreds of people dress up like zombies and shuffle along the streets of Richmond, Virginia. This year’s event took place on October 24. A variety of zombies could be observed taking part in this gruesome Halloween event, including Zombie Girl Scouts, Zombie Policemen, and Zombie Housewives.

The Richmond Zombie Walk has raised money for the American Cancer Society since 2007. Menez started collecting donations for the ACS when his father-in-law was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare but serious form of cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. Since mesothelioma claimed his life, the donations have been made in his memory.

Though it faced some roadblocks in its first year, the Richmond Zombie Walk has grown from about 80 participants to nearly 200 participants now. The shop owners in Carytown, where the zombies actually gather, have had positive reactions to the event. Crowds gather to watch the event, so the increase in foot traffic helps their bottom line.
