Former orphanage to be razed in West Virginia
The St. Thomas More Center in Elm Grove, West Virginia was once an orphanage. More recently, it hosted a number of church retreats and served in an educational capacity. But after the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston spent over $300,000 on the building in the past two years, it has become too much of a financial drain, and it will be demolished sometime this winter.
The Paul IV Center is also run by the diocese, a more modern facility with more amenities located in the same county. It has become cost-prohibitive to operate both facilities.
Asbestos removal is expected to take place at the St. Thomas More Center sometime during the month of November. Most of the building’s equipment and furniture will be kept in storage for use by the St. John’s Home for boys after its expansion.
