Asbestos abatement needed after arson destroys two homes

Two homes in Morgantown, West Virginia are going to be torn down. One of the houses was set on fire three times in two weeks during the month of September. The other house was set on fire twice in August and September. All five fires have been ruled arson.

Though both houses still stand after multiple fires, they are badly damaged and have been condemned. One house will be demolished by its owner; the other will be demolished by the city, and its owner will reimburse the city through a series of payments. Asbestos abatement has to be completed for at least one of the homes before demolition can take place. Asbestos was commonly used in the construction of homes. It is a known carcinogen that must be disposed of safely to minimize the risk of asbestos-related diseases for both workers and the community.
