Asbestos concerns keep Islamic school closed longer following explosion

An explosion in the basement of the Ihsan School of Excellence, a private Islamic school in Syracuse, New York, sent 75 students home on October 8. The accidental explosion was believed to be a result of faulty equipment, though forensic testing is being done to confirm this.

The school remains closed because the explosion spread asbestos throughout the building and its surroundings, requiring extensive cleanup to make it safe again. Students from preschool through seventh grade are attending classes in Al-Huda Mosque at the Muslim American Society of Syracuse in the interim.

The damage caused by the explosion is disheartening, as the school had spent $500,000 in renovations, including a new roof, windows, ceramic tile, carpeting, basketball court and fencing. They are working with the insurance company to fix the damage and clean up the asbestos. The cause of the explosion is being investigated by police, firefighters, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
