More asbestos found at Beacon Elementary School

Beacon Elementary School in Montesano, Washington has had bad luck with asbestos. The toxic substance has been found a second time during its remodeling, this time in four classrooms that are currently being used by students.

Previously, construction workers found asbestos-containing mastic behind the chalkboards of eight classrooms in the 500 building. This time, the asbestos-containing mastic has been discovered behind the blackboards of four classrooms in the 300 building, which are still being used during construction. The principal has stated that the asbestos is not a danger to the staff or students because it is contained within the glue behind the blackboards.

Students will remain in these four classrooms until spring break. They are not in danger from the asbestos, as it will not become airborne before the blackboards are removed. It will cost an additional $4,000 to have certified asbestos contractors remove the asbestos from the 500 building,, but school officials are unsure how much it will cost to remove the toxic substance  from the 300 building. In any case, the necessary asbestos abatement will not delay construction.
