Former grocery store site to become home to new library
The old Dale’s Market building is being knocked down in Albion, New York. Once the property is construction ready, it will be turned over to Swan Library, who purchased the site for $450,000. Asbestos removal on the site was supposed to cost $50,000, but an asbestos inspection uncovered more of the toxic material, pushing up the cost to $110,000. Swan Library and the former grocery store owners agreed to split the cost of the extra asbestos removal.
Swan Library will be building a new structure, as the former grocery store building would have required extensive renovations and a new roof to make it suitable for a modern library. Purchase and construction costs will total about $3.1 million, which will be paid for by library assets and grants, a capital fundraising campaign and a mortgage.
The existing library building was formerly a mansion. It has inadequate parking spaces and is not handicap-accessible. The new library will correct these problems and open up space for programs and library materials.
