Asbestos-laden police building comes down to make way for college building

The Wilmington Police Department building in North Carolina was demolished on October 5.  Police officers had many memories of the building, and some wished it could have been preserved, but most understood why it had to come down.  The department had moved its headquarters in 2006 due to asbestos contamination, leaky windows and a condemned third floor.  Mesotheliomanews.com has been informed that asbestos was removed from the building before demolition began.

The site will be used by Cape Fear Community College for construction of a new building to be called Union Station. Construction costs for the 23,000 square-foot building are estimated at about $58 million, including the refurbishing of a rail-bed alongside the property, and creation of a park, walkway and outdoor amphitheater. Union Station will house the college’s health care programs and a variety of student services.
