SUNY Cortland residence hall reopens after $5.6 million renovation project

The State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland has completed the $5.6 million renovation of Fitzgerald Hall, one of its residential facilities. The Grand Reopening ceremony took place on Thursday, October 15 at 2:00 pm. There were guest speakers, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a reception and building tours. This free event was open to the public.

Fitzgerald Hall was originally built 46 years ago. This renovation project was its first major overhaul since its construction. Asbestos abatement had to be carried out before any of the other renovations could take place. Argus Engineers and King & King Architects of Syracuse made the back of the building look like the front of the building, and a number of environmentally friendly changes were made. The heating system was upgraded to be more energy efficient, reducing both energy usage and carbon footprint, and a “green roof” was planted with turf. The building’s design meets the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Additional renovations included new bathrooms, a new laundry lounge, a new handicap-accessible elevator to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), digital cable and Internet connections in each room, wireless lounges and closet organizers.
