Water systems to be upgraded in Virginia wildlife refuge

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is upgrading the water systems at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia using money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. A larger water line will be installed from the Town of Chincoteague to the wildlife refuge on Assateague Island, replacing the existing pipes. The old pipeline is made of four-inch asbestos cement, and the new eight-inch PVC pipeline will double the water supply capacity. An underground conduit will also be installed along the water line to accommodate fiber optic/broadband cable in the future.

Branscome, Inc. has been awarded the $550,000 contract for the water line project. The goal of increasing the volume of water is to provide a more consistent source of fresh water for visitor services and refuge operations, as well as to improve water pressure and capacity for emergency fire response requirements. The project will both create local jobs and support local tourism.
