Shipyard union gets new home in Newport News, Virginia
United Steelworkers Local 8888 is the largest labor union for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Newport News, Virginia. The shipyard has built a number of ships for the U.S. Navy. The union’s downtown office has been gutted and rebuilt to give them a new home. It took 18 months and $1.13 million, but it is finally finished.
The union building had been in very bad shape. It was contaminated with asbestos, the outdated electrical wiring systems were unsafe, there was a termite infestation, the HVAC systems were deemed ineffective and buckets lined the hallways to catch leaking water.
Contractors installed new plumbing, new electrical systems, a new HVAC system, new fire sprinklers, a new elevator and a new handicap-accessible ramp. There is a new conference room that overlooks the shipyard and a new auditorium that can seat 250 people.
