Asbestos cleanup begins at former paper mill prior to demolition
The Deferiet Paper Mill in New York has had foreclosure proceedings held off until demolition can be completed. JWJ Industries of Mexico has been hired to remove asbestos from the property and demolish the dilapidated buildings. The property’s structures have been falling in on themselves since the developer purchased the site in 2005. He said that he will be happy when the buildings come down so no one will get hurt.
Demolition should be completed by the spring, when the property will be foreclosed on. Three structures will remain standing at that time, and whoever buys the property then will decide how to use them. The current owner is working with the village and the county to help get the site redeveloped. His original intent was to turn it into an environmentally friendly commerce park with several light manufacturers, but he now owes over $500,000 in back taxes. The county may take ownership of the parcels.
