Oregon property owner fined for asbestos violations

Bob Wayne Jonas of Dayton has been fined $7,200 by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for accumulating asbestos-containing materials on his property following demolition of a building there. The building was demolished in 2006, but DEQ inspectors discovered asbestos at the site this past March on an open concrete slab. The asbestos found at the site could have been broken up, which would cause the toxic fibers to become airborne. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can increase the risk of developing asbestos-related illnesses like lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that targets the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen.

After being informed of the asbestos violation, Jonas hired a licensed asbestos abatement contractor to clean up the hazardous materials. He was given an October 14 deadline to appeal the penalty.
