Cedar Glen fire cleanup to finally be completed

Contractors have begun cleaning up debris from the Old Fire of 2003 in Cedar Glen, California. Property owners had until the end of the first week in October to decide whether they would be arranging for the removal of the fire debris themselves or if they wanted to use the contractors hired by the county. Only 40 of the 323 homes destroyed in the fire have been rebuilt so far. The debris left by the remaining homes poses a safety hazard and must be removed.

The county had initially given property owners a cleanup deadline of August 1, but they faced delays when hiring contractors, and there was some concern about the potential presence of asbestos on some of the lots. A certified asbestos consultant will survey the parcels where demolition is taking place. Testing will be required if the consultant suspects the presence of asbestos. If asbestos is indeed present, it will have to be removed by a certified asbestos removal contractor.
