Minnesota school board increases taxes to cover asbestos removal

The Cloquet School Board in Minnesota approved a $1 million increase to the proposed tax levy due to unexpected costs that cropped up over the summer. Asbestos was discovered during summer construction projects, adding $300,000 in unanticipated asbestos removal costs. An additional $550,000 was added to cover the cost of Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) liability for paying insurance benefits owed to retired school district employees.

The school superintendent explained that they did not know about the asbestos prior to beginning construction. Once it was discovered, it had to be removed by law. The public will be invited to a Truth in Taxation Hearing on December 14 to explain the reasons for the increase in the tax levy. High staffing, an unexpected drop in student enrollment and special education are also factors in the tax levy.
