Connecticut high school to undergo asbestos abatement while school is in session
Newton High School in Connecticut has an asbestos problem. The Department of Public Health approved the school’s asbestos abatement project, but some people are unhappy with how the work will be carried out. The two-week asbestos removal began on October 1, while school was in session.
Asbestos was discovered in an exterior wall of the school in the caulk that seals the doors and windows. The toxic substance was also found in a waterproof part of the building’s foundation and in a vapor barrier between the interior and exterior masonry.
Certified asbestos abatement professionals have been hired to complete the work, but some members of the community would feel better off if the work had been done when school was not in session. Air samples were taken before and during the asbestos removal project, but there is some question about whether or not air sampling would be done when work was completed on October 14.
