Colorado approves cleanup and capping of Pueblo Cold Storage site
The Colorado Department of Public Health has given Pueblo County and city officials approval of their plan to cover and cap the former Pueblo Cold Storage site. The county had purchased the burned-out building for $750,000 to get it cleaned up, but there is a legal battle concerning the cost of the cleanup.
Approval of the new plan will allow the county to remove soil that is contaminated with the toxic mineral asbestos to a hazardous waste disposal site. The former building site will then be capped with soil and asphalt. The county must still wait for the city’s approval, however. The capping project will cost an estimated $550,000 to complete.
