Bomb shelter transformed into $28 million data-protection center in Texas

A former Cold War bomb shelter in downtown Waco, Texas was transformed into a new $28 million data-protection center owned by Clearview. The Clearview data-protection center currently has only 12 employees, but the company hopes to expand and hire 150 more people within the next three years, helping the local economy as well as students of Baylor University. The data-protection center will back up sensitive data on secure servers, providing help for companies that face natural disasters at their home sites.

The location is ideal for such a business – a 43,000 square foot building made of steel-reinforced concrete. The tax increment finance (TIF) zone made over $1 million available for asbestos removal and renovations to the façade of the building. Clearview spent another $13 million to make the building ready for use. It is expected to generate $3.6 million in taxes for the TIF zone over the next decade.
