Dallas Cowboys stadium to be imploded next year

Texas Stadium, the former home of the Dallas Cowboys football team, has its days numbered. The Irving City Council has been considering giving a $5.8 million demolition contract to a local excavation company to implode the famous building. Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. was hired to study how the demolition should go forward. It was determined that implosion would be the safest and cheapest way to go forward. Implosion should take place in early 2010 after asbestos abatement has been completed and anything that is not steel or concrete has been removed from the structure.

Though safety was the prime concern when the city settled on the implosion plan, officials will be taking advantage of the spectacle. Irving city employees are discussing potential implosion-related events with the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce and the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau. The City of Irving is considering auctioning off the rights to push the button as a fundraising effort, and numerous cable shows and media outlets would like to film the implosion. Tour operators have also expressed interest in bringing in tourists to watch the implosion take place.
