Federal EPA searches Ohio fire site for asbestos
The former General Industries site in Elyria, Ohio was destroyed in a July 2008 fire. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has collected 200 samples from the fire site in order to test for and discover asbestos contamination after determining that the building owner, John Peshek, had not made a great deal of progress on the cleanup. Peshek hasn’t had suitable financing for the cleanup, so the EPA is moving forward to take charge of the project.
Taking samples of suspected asbestos-containing materials is the first step to the cleanup process. Residents who live in the immediate area have been told not to worry about their health. Contractors are wearing protective gear because they are walking through the site and possibly stirring up asbestos fibers. Certified asbestos contractors are being utilized to keep the public safe during their work. The Ohio EPA is conducting weekly inspections of the site to check for visible asbestos emissions.
