House with homicide history to be demolished by the city
In 1995, the home in Rome, New York belonged to a man charged with the criminally negligent homicide of his girlfriend’s infant son. Ten years later, the home belonged to a man found dead inside more than a 24 hours after his passing. Now the home is abandoned and boarded up, and neighbors have been unsuccessful at trying to sell their homes for over a year.
The city now plans to demolish the home, adding $40,000 in demolition costs and a 50% penalty as a lien on the property, but it already faces foreclosure in January due to unpaid taxes billed to the previous owner’s estate. The city hopes to recoup some of the cost through a civil proceeding. Asbestos abatement, scheduled to begin soon, must be completed prior to demolition.
