Massachusetts building official indicted for extortion, taking bribes from asbestos contractor

Joseph Vasapollo Jr., a building official in Brockton, Massachusetts, has been indicted on three counts of extortion and one count of bribery. Vasapollo had taken over for the previous Building Superintendent after his unexpected death in 2003, but he never obtained state certification for the job.

According to federal investigators, Vasapollo was caught on tape taking bribes from Suburban Middlesex Insulation of Norwood, an asbestos contractor, as far back as 2007 in exchange for asbestos removal work at the Brockton War Memorial Building.

City officials were shocked at the charges brought against Vasapollo, as they had no clue he was capable of doing such a thing, and they have no tolerance for such unethical behavior. The city has stated that it will no longer do business with the asbestos contractor, either.
