Asbestos abatement at Midtown Plaza will take a year to complete

The extensive asbestos removal project at Midtown Plaza in Rochester, New York is going to take a whole year to complete. Work crews are expected to remove nearly 15,000 tons of asbestos-containing materials, including floor tile, drywall and iron structures. Officials have assured the public that the process is being done safely. Asbestos is a known carcinogen that was commonly used in building materials. Exposure to asbestos can result in serious illnesses like asbestosis, asbestos-related lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs and other organs.

Work crews will be utilizing wet removal and negative air pressure as safety techniques to prevent asbestos dust from becoming airborne. Asbestos removal will take place one floor at a time, with floors and walkways being sealed off as the work progresses. Decontamination units have been built, and air quality will be monitored both inside and outside the building. Once the asbestos is removed, it will be transported to certified landfills for disposal.
