Former library continues abatement, green demolition

The old St. Cloud Public Library in Minnesota is another step closer to coming down. Asbestos has been removed, and demolition is slated for October. Books, equipment and other reusable materials were transferred to the new library location last year. Workers from The Retrofit Companies have been removing fluorescent lights, mercury switches and other hazardous materials that require special disposal.

Green demolition practices are being used for this project. Any material that can be recycled or reused will be carefully removed, sent to the landfill only if there’s no market for it. The library site is intended to house an expansion of the Civic Center if the proper funding is secured.
