Air sample tests negative after asbestos found in Groton Municipal Building

Utility crews were working in the basement of the Municipal Building in Groton, Connecticut when they accidentally chipped off some material coating one of the overhead I-beams. The workers left the area and closed it off as a precaution. When samples of the chipped material were collected and analyzed, it was determined that the material was a form of asbestos. Air quality tests came back negative, confirming that the air was safe to breathe. Asbestos is a toxic substance that was commonly used in insulation and construction materials for many years. Asbestos exposure can lead to a number of serious illnesses like mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
