New Orleans hospital remediation in the works

Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana was damaged by flooding during Hurricane Katrina. While some people want to restore the hospital so it can re-open, Governor Bobby Jindal and other state leaders would prefer to build a new teaching hospital.

The state is planning on paying to gut Charity Hospital and take care of environmental remediation, such as asbestos abatement, before development can occur. The hospital building could find a new life as a residential redevelopment. It is one of the options being examined as the Louisiana Recovery Authority continues to work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) over reimbursement for the damage to the hospital building.
