Hall of Justice comes down at Colorado School of Mines
At the Colorado School of Mines, the former Hall of Justice is now a pit between two parking lots. Capital Planning and Construction completed the demolition over the summer. Asbestos contamination, failing masonry, mold and expensive upkeep were all factors in bringing down the building. Asbestos abatement began last winter, with demolition work beginning in June.
As the demolition process was underway, a fire truck sprayed water in the work area to mitigate dust. The only thing that remains now is crushed concrete, which is currently filling the hole left by the basement of the former building. When the hole is filled in, the last step will be landscaping. The contractor stated that about 90% of the building will be recycled, as the hole left by the building and basement will be filled in mostly with the building’s remains – a move that some hope will catch the attention of Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
