Wisconsin mayor seeks funding for demolition of asbestos-laden Mirro building
The Mirro building in Manitowoc, Wisconsin has been empty since the company left town in 2003. The mayor walked through the building recently, stating that its condition is horrible. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting ground and asbestos samplings to determine what remediation will be necessary.
It is estimated that demolition costs could total $5.5 million, including $3 million to dispose of asbestos and other contaminants. Neither the City of Manitowoc nor the owner of the Mirro building can afford the costs. The mayor is working with members of Congress and the federal government to secure stimulus funding for the demolition project.
