American Airlines employees raise over $1 million in Relay for Life
Over the last five years, American Airlines employees have raised over $1 million by walking or running in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an overnight event held at high schools, parks and fairgrounds across the United States. Walking or running teams collect pledges from friends, family and coworkers to raise money for the American Cancer Society and take turns walking or running over a 24-hour period.
American Airlines first took part in the Relay for Life five years ago after an employee of its Fort Worth headquarters was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. In that first event, its employees raised over $18,000. Five years later, they have managed to raise over $1 million for the American Cancer Society. The airline joined the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life National Corporate Program in 2006, committing to having at least 50 teams participating in Relay for Life events across the country each year. Over the last five years, nearly 3,200 American employees have participated.
