Former coke plant receives $6.7 million for brownfield cleanup
The former Carondelet Coke factory in St. Louis, Missouri used to be a coal gasification and coke production plant until it closed in 1988. Heavy pollution prevented the site from being redeveloped for many years, the largest single parcel of publicly owned industrial property in the city. Under the Brownfield Redevelopment Plan, the Missouri Department of Economic Development is giving the city $6.73 million in tax credits to clean up the ground contamination and asbestos at the site.
Environmental Operations Inc. will be completing the asbestos abatement, cleanup and demolition of the site. Once the cleanup operations are complete, the site will be handed over to developer Green Street Broadway Investors LLC for the construction of six new buildings for a new business park. The project could potentially create 360 jobs.
Cleanup will begin in late September or early October, and the work will continue for one to three years. Development of the property could take an additional three years, but it has tremendous potential due to its size and access to highway, river and railroad transportation.
