Delaware Catholic school could be fined for improper asbestos removal
Saint Peter’s School in New Castle, Delaware may face fines from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (DNREC). Church officials had initially used uncertified volunteers to remove asbestos floor tiles from the Catholic school’s gym and cafeteria, but an air quality inspector verified that the remainder of the asbestos was properly disposed of by certified asbestos contractors. If church officials are found guilty of the charges of improper asbestos removal, they could be fined $2,000. Asbestos is a toxic mineral that was commonly used in building materials for most of the Twentieth Century. There is no safe level of asbestos exposure, which can result in serious illnesses like asbestos-related lung cancer or mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
