New York City signs in new construction, demolition, asbestos safety bills
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed four safety bills into law on September 3. The bills were written in response to the 2007 fire at the Deutsche Bank building that killed two firefighters. A panel was formed to make recommendations for the bills, including representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Buildings, the New York Fire Department and Office of Operations.
The bills were designed to improve safety and oversight at construction, demolition and asbestos sites in the city. They help enforce safety at these sites and strengthen standpipe and sprinkler safety to better protect workers, emergency responders and the general public.
